Sombre Tones

The silhouettes say slump down, head down, lay down,

the sky all gray-headed and tattered,

the rattling gate and scuffing cup all singing dirge,

too little hope, too little hunger, too little mattered.

And weary though the world may be, give no notice,

ignore the staring eyed gaze of the hungry,

don't hold the door for the weak, don't give a rip

just find an old rubber band, play it in your teeth

or fill a water bottle and thump out a beat,

singing hey man, this is my day, hey, hey,

let your hand so tired fall to your knee,

hear the clap clap, let your spirit sing.

For weary though the world may be, there's we

we held hands tightly through cold nights

we lifted a sorry tune and let it roll by,

like a train thundering home to no defeat,

we can make time settle just between our hearts

knowing we two are just begun to start

singing hey man, this is my day, hey, hey,

the sun will rise upon a whole new different day.
